THE JIM CAHILL AWARD
Commitment to the Growth and Development of Youth Hockey
The Jim Cahill Award was established in 2006 in memory of Jim Cahill, a coach and hockey father who passed away in 2002. The annual Award recognizes contributions to the development and collegiality of young ice hockey players in Hong Kong.
The Jim Cahill Award was founded by ice hockey enthusiasts who were largely responsible for building the many local youth hockey organizations in Hong Kong. The Award honours the memory of Jim Cahill, whose ability to see the "big picture" -- the values that can be taught through ice hockey, including teamwork, good sportsmanship and the belief that we can all achieve beyond our expectations -- provided an important example for us all. Jim saw the big picture and, as we all head to the rink, week in and week out, at 7am or at 9pm, through victory and loss, it is important that we too see the big picture.
Each year, a player, parent, coach, sponsor, referee or mentor is recognized for having raised the standard of our youth ice hockey programs in Hong Kong. The Award honours the volunteer contributions and accomplishments of a person who is not only passionate about the sport, but is also committed to making a positive impact on the game in Hong Kong. The Award recognizes long-term contributions to the sport, with previous winners including founders of the game in Hong Kong, strong sponsors and advocates who have helped grow and nurture the development of our young ice hockey players.
The recipient of the Award is announced annually at the Jim Cahill Award dinner, which also serves as a fundraiser to support local programs that provide opportunities for underprivileged children to play ice hockey when the cost would otherwise prevent them from doing so.
